Research in the section

Our group aims at performing research according to the 3 dimensions of sustainability: environment, society and economy. Within this framework, we focus on developing methods and tools to assess sustainability from a life cycle perspective. We especially focus on development of tools for use by decision makers, managers and developers of products, product systems and services.

Our main areas of research are:

  • Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) in general (e.g. spatial differentiation, damage modeling, new impact categories), inclusion of absolute sustainability and resilience in LCIA, as well as improvements in the assessment of toxicity related impacts (e.g. simplified characterization models, indoor exposure, assessment of nanomaterials, terrestrial and marine ecotoxicity)
  • Social life cycle assessment: framework, selection of impact categories, development of impact assessment, feasibility and data availability
  • Adaptation and testing of life cycle assessment tools for specific industries and contexts.
